I wish I could take credit for it, but what they had just done was have the opportunity to Skype with the Chief Umpire from the Olympics for Curling!
Rae Kells was kind enough to spend a little over a half hour telling our 3 fifth grade classes about her experiences with curling and with the 2010 Winter Olympics. They had the chance to ask questions, and did they ever! They had so many great questions and we all learned a lot more about curling than we already knew from our research about the different winter Olympic sports and Canada. Questions included what is the weather like in Canada, what kind of shoes do you wear to curl, why is it called curling, is there overtime in curling, and many more. A big thank you to Rae Kells and to Marlo Gaddis in the WSFCS Technology Department for helping set up this great opportunity. The students are still so excited!
He told us that he writes books to entertain and teach us things. He shared some of his books with us and read one called: Petite Rouge ( A Cajun Red Riding Hood)to the children in a Louisiana accent. He also showed us how he draws and illustrates stories how he colors and shades them in. The children were excited to get the chance to ask questions to a real author. The result was the birth of the Cream of the CROCS! awards. In choosing our 'CROC' each quarter, we consider:

Character
Respect
Outstanding academics
Collaboration
Specialists

Cream of the CROCS is a positive recognition program created and implemented by all of our specialists. Every quarter, each specialist will choose a student, from each grade level, who excels or shows progress in one of the following areas: character, respect, academics and collaboration. Each student will receive a certificate, have his/her picture taken and placed on the bulletin board across from the cafeteria and his/her name presented on the morning announcements! Eventually, we would like to have the pictures of them holding their certificates to scroll across the TVs in the hallway, too!
First quarter CROCS are now on display on the bulleting board just outside the cafeteria and 2nd quarter students will be recognized soon. Keep your eyes open and be sure to congratulate these students on their hard work!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5293290253423601191.post-38772405069091735872010-01-21T12:27:00.002-05:002010-01-21T12:30:56.076-05:00African Library ProjectEach elementary school in WSFCS has been paired with a school in Africa to collect donated books for them to be able to start a library at the schools. Our goal is to collect 1,000 books for Tobane Primary School in Botswana. These schools often do not even have textbooks to teach from. We will be collecting now through Feb. 19 and members of the Symphony (who are sponsoring the drive) will pick them up weekly. I will place a purple box outside the library for donations. The types of books needed are also below.

Part of the mission of the African Library Project is to teach Americans about Africa while doing our book drives. You are joining an amazing group of volunteers throughout the USA and Africa who have already started 375 libraries in eight countries. Our book drive is part of a large effort the African Library Project has undertaken to start libraries in Botswana's primary schools. Recycling our gently used books will open a whole new world of learning and opportunity to the students in your partner library in Botswana.

We are so pleased to be partnering with the Winston-Salem Symphony and the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools to start small libraries in the Selibe Phikwe School District of Botswana. This is a unique and innovative project that offers us the opportunity to raise an unprecedented amount of books from a single location in the USA. Our partner in Botswana is Tobane Primary School. Tobane Primary School serves 594 students and has 20 teachers. Your goal is to collect 1,000 preschool-5th grade books from your school. You can also include a few upper level books (up to 8th grade) for the teachers. They are particularly interested in books on agriculture, social studies, science, technology and fiction. They would appreciate puzzles, flash cards and educational games.

Book Drive Guidelines

Appropriate Books
• Children's Picture Books
• Children's Fiction and Non-Fiction (through middle school would be OK)
• Early Readers
• Juvenile Literature
• Children's Dictionaries
• Encyclopedias less than 15 years old/Children's Encyclopedias
• Accurate atlases
• Thesauruses
• Paperback textbooks in Math, English, Geography and Science
• Books with universal themes (friendship, animals, love, etc.)

Inappropriate Books:
• Books that are filled with small print, no pictures, etc. (too intimidating or boring)
• Books with lots of slang (too difficult to follow)
• Books for young children that have many references to household appliances and technology (including refrigerators, microwaves, etc.)
• Adult paperback romance novels
• Books about American holidays or religious holidays
• Books that evangelize or promote a particular religion

Thanks for any help you can give us!
Mrs. DuBois
Media CoordinatorMary Ann Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02339521752983923283noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5293290253423601191.post-16151042747630240082010-01-21T12:24:00.002-05:002010-01-21T12:25:58.807-05:00Musical Endeavors"Four fifth graders will represent Caleb's Creek Elementary at the Elementary All-County Chorus rehearsal and concert to be held at Southwest Elementary School in Clemmons on Thursday and Friday February 18-19. To be able to bring diversity and integrate world cultures into the curriculum is an important educational opportunity for our learners at Caleb’s Creek Elementary School. Such an opportunity was realized when the Spanish program and the Fourth Grade classes converged for the October edition of Fourth Grade Fun Friday.
During the event the students were able to listen to some popular Spanish music and were treated to a variety of typical Mexican sodas and food stuffs. The highlight of the celebration occurred when the Fourth Graders were able to see a Spanish language hands-on demonstration in which Mr. Alonso made Pico de Gallo. Not only were students able to witness the making of this traditional Mexican gastronomic delight, they were able to sample it as well!
Of course this entire experience would have been impossible had not been for the help and support of all the wonderfully dedicated parents of our Fourth Grade students here at CCES.

¡Gracias!

Mr. Alonso
Spanish Teacher
Caleb’s Creek Elementary SchoolMary Ann Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02339521752983923283noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5293290253423601191.post-21879187233704466222009-11-16T09:45:00.001-05:002009-11-30T11:35:38.555-05:00Dedication ProgramMonday, November 5, 2009 Caleb's Creek Elementary was officially dedicated in a ceremony held at the school. The JROTC Color Guard from Glenn High School did the Presentation of Colors. We were honored to have the invocation delivered by Reverend Mike Shroyer, the Children's Pastor of The Summit Church. Fifth and Sixth grade students sang Step into the Spotlight led by the music teacher Kemp Baker. Carol Minchew, President of the PTA, recognized PTA officers and community partners followed by recognition of School Board members and guests by Donald L. Martin, Jr. the Superintendent of WS/FC schools. The event was highlighted with an exclusive reading by Morgan Hairston, a third grade student sharing an excerpt from his PTA Reflection Contest entry and a song entitled "Technology" shared by first grader Thomas Hurley. Thanks goes to A. L. (Buddy) Collins the Buildings and Grounds Committee Chair from the Board of Education for the Dedicatory Remarks . The building was presented by Perry Peterson of Peterson/Gordon Architects, PA. with the building being dedicated - "officially" open for public use. Mrs. Judy Jones, the principal gave her acceptance of the building by accepting a large key and gave closing remarks.
Caleb's Creek plans to host a celebration at the completion of our first year and seal a time capsule with contents that were added by a student representative from each grade level during the dedication program. Other items will be added as created this year by students and faculty. It will be interesting to see what items will be chosen to go inside that time capsule, and to determine when it will be reopened. Perhaps it's something we seal, open in 10 years, reflect, add new products, and reseal for opening 10 years from then. Whatever we decide to do we'll only be putting a snapshot of Caleb's Creek - its beginning and birth.Mary Ann Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02339521752983923283noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5293290253423601191.post-65212297873453895512009-11-16T09:25:00.001-05:002009-11-30T11:38:19.329-05:00Welcome to Caleb's Creek Elementary SchoolCaleb's Creek Elementary- Home of the Crocs-is one of two new elementary schools that opened during the 2009-2010 school year. It was built with funds generated from the 2006 School Bond Referendum. The school joins Diggs, Forest Park, Hall-Woodward, Sedge Garden, and Union Cross elementary schools in Zone 1. The school is located on Salem Crossing Road in the southeast area of Forsyth County.
The two-story design of the building allows better utilization of a relatively small site and, like Kimmel Farm Elementary, is one of the first two-story elementary schools to be built in forsyth County in more than thirty years.
